Mbarara calls for vigilance over rise in Mpox cases
Officials in Mbarara City have raised concern over a surge in Mpox cases, with three recent cases identified in Katete, one confirmed positive, and five additional suspects from Nyakayojo under investigation.
This increase comes after a previously monitored couple successfully recovered and was discharged.

“These are signals that the disease has come; the public must take precautions,” warned Dr. Albert Mugarura, Head of Health in North Division, Mbarara City.
Dr. Mugarura advised the public to remain vigilant about Mpox symptoms, such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinctive rash, urging anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek medical attention.
“We want the public to be on high alert,” he emphasized, stressing that prompt action is crucial in containing the virus.
In response, Mbarara City is ramping up its efforts to curb further transmission.
A major concern, however, is the social stigma surrounding Mpox, which could drive affected individuals to hide their illness.
“If you stigmatize the disease, the sick people will hide.
He highlighted the risk stigma poses to public health efforts.
To counter this, Dr. Mugarura is calling for community-wide education initiatives to reduce fear, foster support, and encourage openness.
