ANKOLE | A project director of HIV preventionin Ankole sub-region has issued a formal apology for his remarks suggesting that Bishop Stuart University students contribute to high HIV rates through commercial sex work and inadequate use of prevention measures like condoms.
Dr Abdallah Nkoyooyo's remarks drew widespread criticism in Ankole sub-region and the USAID Local Partner Health Services TASO has put his hands up.
“I would like to personally extend a public apology for the inconvenience caused by my miscommunication towards Bishop Stuart University’s administration, students, and other stakeholders,” he said.
On September 24, Dr Nkoyooyo had claimed that students at Bishop Stuart University were engaging in sex work.
"The girls from Kakoba are trading sex to us, the corporate people," he said then.
He also addressed allegations made in a university press release that accused him of procuring sex from students.
“I want to distance myself from the allegations made in the press release. I am a responsible person who is married and living a responsible life. I am very sorry for the inconvenience,” he emphasized.
This incident highlights the critical need for responsible communication, particularly regarding sensitive topics like HIV/AIDS.
