Minister Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke commissions the project construction

Authorities in Kisoro District have commissioned the construction of a Shs4.1 billion 40-bed isolation unit at Kisoro Hospital.

During the official handover of construction works to Geses Uganda Limited in Kisoro Municipality on Tuesday, Engineer George Otim, the commissioner of health infrastructure development at the Ministry of Health, emphasised the significance of the isolation senre.

He highlighted its role in accommodating infectious diseases not only from the district but also from neighbouring countries such as Rwanda and DR Congo.

According to the Kisoro Hospital medical superintendent, Dr Emmanuel Bahane, the health facility has been receiving patients with infectious diseases from Rwanda and DR Congo.

The isolation unit will be used to accommodate such cases.

Eng Peter Nkurunungi, the director of Geses Uganda Limited, outlined the timeline for the project, estimating a completion period of one year.

Despite challenges encountered during the initial phases, such as the arduous lock excavation, he mentioned that they have progressed to 43 percent completion, attributing this progress to adaptability under the new governmental system.

The State Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, expressed optimism regarding the isolation centre's role in bolstering the district's preparedness for contagious illnesses.

Minister Nyirabashitsi urged stakeholders to diligently monitor and supervise the project to ensure its timely and effective completion.
