It's Movember; Grow that moustache out!

Nsenene also known as grasshoppers are a beloved Uganda delicacy that is enjoyed and savoured by many. November is the peak season for grasshoppers.

As Ugandans readily and steadily, harvest and munch on grasshoppers this month,  many countries around the world will also be engaging in the Movember. Started in Australia in 2003, it has since gained international recognition and participation.

"Movember" is a portmanteau for "mustache" and "November," and involves men growing mustaches with the backdrop of  generating conversation and awareness around men's health issues such as prostrate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health. Some men not only allow the moustache to grow out but the beard as well.

Movember typically doesn't have climax celebrations in the traditional sense however the focus is on the month-long campaign and awareness to support the cause.

Globally, among the men's health issues, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. It is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in men.  Symptoms may be non-specific and may not present until the cancer has progressed. Raising awareness, knowing risk factors and symptoms and seeking early medical attention is critical for prevention.

There has been increased acknowledgement of the important role mental health plays in achieving global development goals, as illustrated by the inclusion of mental health in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Men particularly often struggle with their feelings in silence, and it’s common for them to believe they need to “get over it” or “toughen up.” Talking about men’s mental health benefits everyone: themselves, their loved ones, and society at large.

Emphasizing and raising awareness about men's health is crucial to reduce the prevalence of preventable conditions, improve overall well-being, and save lives and every opportunity to do this must not be taken lightly. Mo!
