Ministry of Kampala benchmarks on Gulu City roads
Some of the road network in Gulu City

The technical leaders from the ministry of Kampala Capital City Authorityย  ย are inย  Gulu Cityย  to study it's impressive road network.

With funding from the World bank, the Ministry of Kampala and metropolitan affairs under the office of the President intends to transform the road network in the Kampala and its surroundings.

With Gulu having successfully implemented the USMID (Uganda Support to Municipal infrastructure Development Project), it has transformed into a model city with wide, well lit and smooth roads seems to be the best study model.

In the last 10 years Gulu city has undergone aย  rebirth, from the rubble left behind by the 20 year long LRA war to a bustling city of the North that has become the focus of the country.

Theย  technical leaders from the ministry of Kampala capital city and metropolitan affairs are benchmarking on the successful construction and maintenance of the impressive Gulu city road network.

"The key components of this project are roads, markets, workspaces and drainages and because Gulu City has implemented similar projects and has had good experiences. It therefore became important for us to look at what has been done, learn a few lessons so we can polish how we do our things", saidย  Eng. Denis Adrole, an infrastructure specialist at the Ministry of Kampala .

The Principal Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Kampala capital city and metropolitan affairs, Evelyn Atuhaire said the Kampala team intends to improve the road network in the capital city and the surrounding municipalities in Mukono, Wakiso and Mpigi.

"We have been impressed with infrastructure developments that have been made in terms of roads and asย  the ministry of Kampala, we are implementing our five year world bank project named the greater Kampala Urban development program," she said .

The transformation of the Gulu city road network results from its successful construction of 63 kilometers of modern roads under the Uganda Support to Municipal infrastructure Development Project commonly known as USMID.

"USMID being a capital intensive project through World bank, Gulu city has been able to deliver over and above the promises they have made to the people of Gulu with the little fundings we have got. Lastย  year we received money for six roads, but we ended up doing 8 roads" saysย  Gulu city Engineer Christopher Omara Balmoyi.

"Weย  have also given them very honest feedback and position and development in Gulu city, that they can also go and improve Kampala."

The five year project that seeks to improve the infrastructure and mobility within the capital city is named the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area โ€“ Urban Development Program, funded by the World Bank and implemented by the government of Uganda through the office of the President in the Ministry of Kampala capital city and metropolitan affairs.
