Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed wins Nobel Peace Prize

Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has won this year's Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to ensure peace and reconciliation, especially in Africa at a function held in the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

Abiy is credited for his efforts in ensuring the end of a 20-year war between Ethiopia and Eritrea over a disputed border territory that has cost both countries largely in terms of finance and human capital.

The 43-year-old Prime Minister was also instrumental in brokering a power-sharing deal in neighboring Sudan, after a political crisis that led to the arrest of Omar al-Bashir, the country's ruler for almost three decades.

Abiy on Friday beat a total of 301 candidates that had been nominated to become the 100th winner of the prestigious award.

Of the 301 candidates nominated for the award, 223 were individuals whereas 78 were organisations.
