Renowned journalist Deogratius Male leaves Uganda over threats on his life

Renowned Hoima post and Metro FM journalist,Deogratius Male alias Omusawo Tintah has escaped from Uganda weeks after is his attack and battering by unknown goons near his home.

Male was on the night of April,15, 2024 attacked and badly beaten near his home at Kubadongo, Salama road, Makindye Division in Kampala.

He was rushed to Good Samaritan clinic, Makindye, where he received treatment from.

This website has been reliably informed that on Sunday he exited the country to Canada where he is seeking for asylum after his attackers cautioned him against writing and advocating for rights, especially for LGBTQ members on his website “www.hoimapost.co.ug”

After his attack, Male said that his attackers who made away with nothing cautioned him against writing stories and advocating for human rights and LGBTQ rights.

"The attackers told me that if I continue pushing for these rights, my family and I would would face the consequences," he said.

He also revealed that on several occasions he received threatening text messages from unknown numbers instructing him to abandon the advocacy for Human rights and LGBTQ rights.

It should be noted that Anti Homosexuality law enacted in May 2023 punishes consensual same-sex relations with life imprisonment.

The law has potential ramifications for the press beyond issues with sourcing because anyone convicted of printing, broadcasting, or distributing material “promoting or encouraging homosexuality” could be imprisoned for 20 years.
