Police have warned that the forthcoming consultative meetings and mobilization by opposition National Unity Platform party will not be allowed to continue.
Addressing journalists on Monday, police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said they have got wind of plans by NUP to resume their consultative meetings but said they are unlawful.
“We suspended their activities after several breaches of the guidelines issued to them by the police. The suspension continues until when NUP leadership complies with police guidelines and continues to be law abiding,” Enanga said.
NUP over the weekend announced it would resume its consultative meetings all over the country.
However, the announcement came on the backdrop of the suspension of the meetings by police last year.
Police said then that the mobilization tours and rallies were being done in open spaces which are difficult to manage, adding that the National Unity Platform was using poorly trained people to act as guards which put the lives of their supporters and well-wishers in danger.
According to police, the meetings had caused chaos in the various parts of the country where they had been held.
In the latest warning, police said they still stand with last year’s ban of the meetings until some issues are rectified by the opposition political party
“We are aware of their schedule when they continue with their consultative meetings but they should know that as police, we have a duty under the constitution to maintain peace and order. Our priority has always been to ensure Ugandans and visitors enjoy a safe and secure environment,” Enanga said.
In October last year, lawyer Male Mabirizi dragged government to court over the ban on NUP’s consultative meetings.
The lawyer asked court to overturn the ban that he said was illegal.
