Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament, Francis Zaake Butebi, has strongly condemned the government for detaining a number of Ugandans without trial, arguing that such actions are a violation of fundamental human rights.
The legislator urged the authorities to release these prisoners, particularly as the country approaches the 2026 general elections, to allow them to exercise their democratic right to vote.
Speaking during Juma prayers at Masjid Jamia, the main mosque in Mityana Municipality,Zaake expressed deep concern over the continued incarceration of individuals without fair judicial processes.
“It is unjust to hold citizens in detention without giving them the right to a fair hearing. Everyone deserves due process before the law, as we approach the 2026 elections, it is crucial that all citizens, including those unjustly detained, are given the opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote,” Zaake stated.
Muslim leaders lead by sheikh Anus Mivule echoed Zaake’s sentiments, adding their voices to the call for justice.
“We appreciate our MP for always standing with us. As Muslims ,the only gift the government should give us is to release all our brothers in prison , let the government listen to the cries of the people and ensure justice for those unfairly detained," Sheikh Mivule noted.
The area Imam, Umaru Natwijuka emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional rights, urging the country’s leadership to take immediate action.
“Political persecution and detention without trial undermine democracy. We call upon the President and all concerned authorities to release these prisoners,”Natwijuka emphasized.
The issue of political detainees has been a contentious one, with opposition figures and human rights activists consistently raising alarms over what they term as unjust arrests and prolonged detentions.
Zaake’s latest remarks are expected to reignite discussions on the matter, particularly as the country gears up for the 2026 elections.
It remains to be seen how the government will respond to these renewed demands, but for the people of Mityana and beyond, the call for justice continues to grow louder.
As a gesture of solidarity with the Muslim community, Zaake donated food items, including sugar and beverages, to support those in need. The act of kindness was well received, with many believers expressing gratitude for his generosity.
"Standing for human rights means not only speaking out against injustice but also showing support to those in need,” said Francis Zaake.
“This small gesture is a sign of solidarity with my Muslim brothers and sisters.” he added.
The Muslims greatly appreciated their MP, Zaake, for coming to their aid with various items during this fasting period.
"It is not just about the items he has given, but the fact that he stands with us in times of need,” a community elder remarked. “May he be blessed for his kindness.”
