Court acquits lawyer Karamagi of any wrongdoing for grabbing late Attorney General Nyombi's speech 

Buganda road magistrates court has on Monday afternoon acquitted city lawyer Andrew Karamagi of any wrongdoing for grabbing the speech of the late Attorney General Peter Nyombi during a function.

In an unprecedented stunt; while at the new lawyer’s day, the then 25-year-old walked to Attorney General Nyombi(now deceased)  who was delivering a speech, whispered to him and grabbed  his speech leaving him in a  panicky mood.

He was later arrested and charged with being a public nuisance and inconveniencing and embarrassing the then Attorney General.

On Monday after, Buganda road Grade one magistrate Joan Aciro ruled that there was no evidence to show that Karamagi had turned himself into a public nuisance because of his actions on the day.

The magistrate also ruled that the state that presented two witnesses including the victim (Nyombi) and a police officer had failed to prove that there was public annoyance by Karamagi’s actions on the day.

“There was no evidence to show any member of the public was annoyed by the actions of the accused. In fact there was evidence of laughter by the crowd after his actions,”Aciro said in her judgment.

“Instead, members of the public are said to have gone ahead to prevent the arrest of the accused.”

The magistrate insisted that there was no inconvenience caused to anyone following Karamagi’s actions to the late Attorney General, noting that after the altercation everyone resumed with their business.

“After the incident, he(Nyombi) resumed his seat because he never left the podium. There was no scuffle as the state wanted us to believe.”

She ruled that having failed to get proof without any reasonable doubt of Karamagi’s crime, she was forced to acquit him of any wrongdoing.
