National Resistance Movement’s Naome Kibaaju has been declared the winner of the Monday by- election for Sheema North.

Kibaaju garnered 11,326 votes to beat Forum for Democratic Change’s Guma Nuwagaba who polled 7322 votes in a two horse race whose results were declared on Monday evening.

“Having added up the number of voters recorded on each declaration of  results form in accordance with the law, I accordingly declare Naome Kibaaju who has obtained the the largest number of votes , winner of Sheema County North constituency,” said Deborah Asiimwe, the Sheema district returning officer.

The highly contested polls were held under tight security that saw some FDC leaders arrested earlier in the day whereas on the other side, the opposition party accused the ruling NRM party candidate of voter bribery and intimidation.

The Sheema County North parliamentary seat fell vacant after the then area MP and Minister for Science, technology and innovation Elioda Tumwesigye was elected the MP for the newly created Sheema Municipality.

Guma was until a few weeks ago a member of the ruling NRM party and RDC for neighboring Mitooma district but on losing to Kibaaju in the party primaries he contested the outcome before crossing to FDC.
