The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has revealed that during one of their mobilisation drives in Luweero District, they invoked the help of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine, to attract crowds.

The revelation was made by the Party’s  Director of Communications and Publicity, Emmanuel Dombo while appearing on NBS TV.

Dombo made the comments about Bobi Wine’s popularity, urging that the NRM is very well aware of the NUP president’s ability to mobilise the masses, but also very informed of his inability to translate such into political wizardry.

“Bobi Wine is a celebrity, there is no question about that. There is a time when we had a rally in Luweero and could not mobilise enough people, we invited Hon Bobi Wine to conduct a music show,” Dombo said.

Dombo however clarified that the events happened before Bobi Wine was a member of parliament and consequently leader of the NUP.

“I think he is a very intelligent man who discovered that it is possible to transform people who come to you as a celebrity into political capital. Wherever he foes people will gather but does not mean wherever he goes they are his supporters, and also is it sustainable?” he added.

The NRM has consistently sold the idea that Bobi Wine’s numbers resonate with his celebrity status rather than his political weight, the party contends that Bobi can never upstage them or shock their political relevance.

Previously, they have referred to the political success of the NUP in Buganda as a mere wave.
