KCCA employs Girl shot by their officers in sign of reconciliation
Lowenah after she was shot

In a remarkable act of reconciliation, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has hired Lowenah Nankya, a young woman who was accidentally shot in the mouth by their enforcement team in 2020. The incident, a stray bullet during a street vendor operation, left Lowenah with severe facial injuries and her mother permanently disabled.

Now, after two years of legal battles and frustrations, Lowenah has stepped into a new role – not as a victim, but as a KCCA intern. Starting today, she'll be gaining practical experience in the same institution that once caused her significant harm.

In a statement, KCCA spokesperson Simon Kasyate acknowledged the "fair share of publicity" surrounding Lowenah's story, emphasizing their ongoing efforts to provide "remedial action" for her and her mother. He hailed Lowenah's internship as a positive step, stating:

"Lowenah reports at KCCAUG today as one of the graduate interns for this quarter. A student of Human Resources Management, she's been inducted into the Directorate of Administration and Human Resources. Here Lowena is expected to pick practical knowledge on and about her area of study, share with us her acquired knowledge to improve our systems and process and get a feel of a workplace environment. The transition from a victim to a staff member of KCCAUG is a testament to our unwavering commitment towards improving our relations with stakeholders."

Lowenah's journey symbolizes a crucial step towards healing and rebuilding trust. While the emotional scar of the initial incident undoubtedly remains, her internship opens a door to personal and professional growth within the very institution that caused her hardship. It serves as a powerful message of accountability, reconciliation, and hope for a brighter future.
