Former Minister Rukia Nakadama appointed new Pakistan envoy to Uganda

The former State Minister for, Gender Rukia Isanga Nakadama has been appointed as the Honorary Consul of Pakistan in Uganda, the Nile Post has learnt.

Last month, the Pakistan High Commission in Nairobi described the honorary Consulate of Pakistani operating in Uganda under singer and songwriter Angella Katatumba as fake and fictitious no legal authority.

In a letter dated March 13, 2018 and copied to the High Commission in Nairobi Kenya, all diplomatic missions, international organizations, consulates and  the Pakistan Association in Uganda, the commission  said the ‘’so-called” honorary consulate of Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Uganda had been ceased to function with the demise of Boney Katatumba.”

The businessman who had served as consul for 17 years died in February this year of pneumonia and asthma at the Kampala International Hospital.

However, this website has learnt that at the backdrop of all this fracas and even before his death, the mission in Nairobi had earlier on January 16 written to the Ugandan foreign affairs ministry proposing Nakadama to represent them in Uganda.

Uganda accepts

In a response letter dated May 3, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has accepted to grant the request by the Pakistan High Commission.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda has the honor to inform that agreement has been granted to the appointment of Hon. Nakadama Rukia Isanga as the honorary consul of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Republic of Uganda,” says the letter from the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the High Commission of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan the assurance of its highest consideration.”

Katatumba accepts defeat

Angela Katatumba, daughter to Bonney Katatumba had previously said she is the Pakistan consul to Uganda following the demise of his dad arguing that the Foreign Affairs Ministry was focused on fighting her.

She would later address the Pakistan community in Kampala during celebrations to mark the Pakistan Day.

When contacted about the latest, development, the singer said she is left with no choice but hand over office to its newly appointed bearer.

“We have known about Nakadama’s proposal for quite some time. After she is vetted we shall be communicated to in detail. In my view that is how protocol should be and not the way Nairobi was doing it, they simply were into embarrassing me instead of doing the right thing,”Katatumba told the Nile Post in a phone interview on Thursday afternoon.

“What is left for me is to hand over office and wish her (Nakadama well). I have no problem with her appointment because it comes legitimately. We have now closed office here and I am now starting on other business.”
