Lady Justice Faridah Shamillah Bukirwa's ongoing battle to retain her position as a judge at the Jinja High Court has taken a significant turn, with sources from State House indicating a scheduled meeting with President Museveni.
This meeting, expected to follow today’s cabinet session, could be decisive for the embattled judge’s future.
Judge Bukirwa’s situation became a matter of public interest after her sudden removal from the Jinja High Court under mysterious circumstances.
On August 8, Principal Judge Flavian Zeija issued a directive for Justice Bukirwa to vacate her office by August 15, as her contract as an acting judge was nearing its end.
Despite this directive, the lack of transparency surrounding her reappointment has raised concerns. Judiciary spokesperson James Ereemye, when questioned about Justice Bukirwa's status and her upcoming meeting with the President, declined to provide details, leaving the judge’s fate uncertain.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC), responsible for recommending judicial appointments, has distanced itself from the controversy.
Dr Rose Nassali Lukwago, the permanent secretary of the JSC, stated that the commission had fulfilled its mandate by recommending Justice Bukirwa for reappointment.
However, Dr Nassali emphasised that the JSC has no insight into why the President has not issued her appointment instrument.
“Our role ends at recommending,” Dr Nassali told the Nile Post.
“We forwarded her name to the President, but we do not know why the Judiciary has not received her instrument of appointment. If there are questions about her appointment, they should be directed to the Head of State.”
Juddge Bukirwa's removal has sparked discussions within legal circles, with many questioning why a judge with her experience and track record would be sidelined.
Her supporters argue that her abrupt removal lacks justification and hint at possible political influences behind the decision.
As Judge Bukirwa prepares to meet with President Museveni, the legal fraternity and the public eagerly await the outcome of this high-stakes discussion.
Whether she will be reinstated or her removal will be confirmed remains to be seen, but the case has underscored the complexities and challenges within Uganda’s judicial appointment processes.
This is developing story and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
