Mountain Division launches tree planting in Rwenzori

The UPDF Mountain Division, under the leadership of Maj Gen Richard Otto, has initiated a tree planting campaign at Muhoti Barracks in Fort Portal City, Kabarole District.

This effort is part of the government's broader strategy to enhance environmental conservation.

The campaign's first phase aims to plant 10,000 trees within the barracks, symbolizing a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.

Otto, who also commands Operation Shujaa, called on UPDF officers to plant trees in their deployment areas, emphasising the importance of leaving a legacy of environmental stewardship.

Deputy Division Commander Col Muwonge, responsible for overseeing the project's implementation, encouraged officers to engage enthusiastically in the initiative.

He stressed the critical role tree planting plays in addressing environmental challenges in the Rwenzori region.

This area, known for its rivers such as Nyamwamba, Mubuku, Rwimi, and Lamia, has experienced severe riverbank bursts, floods, and landslides due to human activities.

These events have led to loss of life, displacement, and the disruption of livelihoods.

Tree planting is essential for mitigating soil erosion and promoting environmental health.

The launch event saw attendance from Mountain Division officers and marks the beginning of a broader project that will extend to all Brigades under the Division, with plans to eventually involve civilian communities.
