Students from several schools gathered at the Next Media Park in Naguru for the launch of Nextars, a new youth empowerment programme aimed at nurturing talent and helping young people navigate the complex challenges of adolescence with purpose and direction.
The colourful event was marked by energetic performances, including music, dance, fashion, and poetry, offering a glimpse into the vibrant creativity of Uganda’s youth.
Next Media Group CEO Kin Kariisa said the initiative, which is being rolled out in partnership with organisations such as MTN Uganda, Farmers Choice, and Black, seeks to address issues like mental health, career guidance, and substance abuse among teenagers.
“We are going to schools to talk about mental health, career guidance, how to behave, and how to stay away from drugs,” Kariisa said.
“Most of our children are ending up in rehab. How can we put in place mitigation measures? By engaging young people early.”
He added that Nextars was not just about awareness but also about identifying and supporting young talent.
“We are working with young people to create content, and the next question is: how do we commercialise it? How do we help them create content that matters? What kind of courses should they pursue at university to secure dignified jobs?”
MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge said the partnership with Next Media was born out of a shared commitment to youth empowerment and creativity.
“We believe Nextars is a great platform that allows us to celebrate the uniqueness and creativity of young people in a way that resonates with them,” she said. “It’s about meeting them where they are, understanding them, and helping them grow.”
Kariisa said the media group had already dedicated platforms like NBS Music, NBS Plus, and Pulse Radio to support content that speaks to the youth.
These platforms will also help young creators reach broader audiences and gain visibility.
Students can join Nextars by visiting any of the affiliated platforms and scanning a QR code to register.
The programme is expected to expand across schools in the coming months, with on-ground engagements, mentorship sessions, and talent showcases forming the core of its activities.
With a mix of entertainment, guidance, and opportunities, Nextars aims to be more than just a media campaign — it’s positioned as a national movement to support the next generation in finding their voice and shaping their future.
