A Journey of Leadership, Love, and Inspiration-Nyamutooro

The State Minister for Energy and Mineral Development,Phionah Nyamutooro graced the airwaves of Morning Switch, captivating listeners with her candid reflections on her personal life, career, and aspirations.
Born in Nebbi and inspired by her late grandfather, a former Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Phionah’s journey into politics was seemingly predestined.
From her early days as a pencil collector in nursery school to her current role as a minister, her story is one of resilience, determination, and unwavering focus.
Phionah’s passion for leadership was evident from a young age. As the firstborn in her family, she embraced responsibility early on, excelling in History, Economics, Literature, and Divinity during her school years.
Her leadership trajectory began in nursery school, where she collected pencils, and continued through primary school, where she served as class prefect, school prefect, and ultimately head prefect.
“None of my former schoolmates are surprised by where I am today,” she shared. “Leadership has always been a part of me.”
Her grandfather, a prominent figure in her life, played a pivotal role in shaping her aspirations. “I used to see him with the president, and I heard the word ‘politician’ from him.
It sounded nice, and I always wanted to be one,” she recalled. This early exposure to politics ignited a fire within her, setting her on a path to public service.
As a minister, Phionah’s schedule is demanding, leaving little room for personal pursuits. Yet, she finds joy in the little gaps of time she carves out for herself. “I love to travel, swim, listen to music, dance, and read,” she said.
Though her current responsibilities limit these activities, her love for music remains unwavering. “I don’t have a particular genre.
As long as the song is good, I enjoy it,” she added with a smile. If she were a DJ, she joked, she’d call herself “Princess Phiona,” inspired by the movie Shrek.
Despite her achievements, Phionah remains humble and driven. “I haven’t had my ‘wow’ moment yet. I am always challenged to do more,” she admitted.
Her heart is set on securing city status for Nebbi, a goal that reflects her deep commitment to her roots and her people.
Phionah’s appointment as State Minister for Energy and Mineral Development was met with skepticism by some, who questioned her ability to handle the demanding portfolio.
“There was so much talk, people wondering why the president had chosen a young lady like me,” she recalled. However, her inaugural speech silenced critics and went viral, showcasing her eloquence, vision, and capability. “They wondered if I was really the one who spoke. But I laughed the whole time,” she said, reflecting on the moment with pride.
Phionah’s love story is as inspiring as her career. Married to Edirisa Musuuza aka Eddie Kenzo, a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, she revealed that their relationship was far from love at first sight.
“I don’t believe in love at first sight. I’ve never experienced it,” she said. Their first meeting, which was supposed to be a business discussion, took an unexpected turn. “He was on his phone the whole time, and I was irritated. When I asked what was up, he said, ‘I want to marry you.’ I walked away,” she recounted with a laugh.
Over time, however, their bond grew stronger. “Now he’s saved in my phone as ‘soulmate,’ not Edirisa Musuuza,” she shared.
Her love language is quality time, which she describes as an investment. “When I’m at home, I call him different names depending on my mood—babe, king, or Edirisa Musuuza if he’s upset me,” she joked.
Phionah’s story is a testament to the power of focus, intent, and hard work. She encourages anyone who looks up to her to stay committed to their goals and never shy away from challenges.
“Leadership is about service, and there’s always more we can do,” she emphasised.
As she wrapped up her interview, Phionah left listeners with a heartfelt prayer for the Morning Switch team, embodying the grace and humility that have defined her journey.
Her story is not just one of personal success but also a beacon of hope for aspiring leaders, especially young women, who dare to dream big and break barriers.
Phionah Nyamutooro is more than a minister; she is a role model, a trailblazer, and a symbol of what can be achieved with determination, passion, and an unwavering commitment to one’s goals.
Her journey continues to inspire, proving that with hard work and focus, anything is possible.
