Six visually impaired Senior Six candidates at Hornby High School in Kabale District are among those set to sit for the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations beginning on Monday.

The students were today briefed on the rules and procedures for the national exams.

Hornby High School, known for catering to learners with disabilities, has a total of 30 Senior Six candidates this year, including six with visual impairments.

During the briefing, the candidates received special instructions in preparation for their exams, which will be administered under the supervision of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).

Headteacher George Tumusiime Aturebire said the school is well-prepared to support the candidates, noting that UNEB provides special arrangements for learners with disabilities, including separate examination rooms and customized materials.

“We have six special needs candidates—two boys and four girls—who are ready for their final exams,” Aturebire said.

“UNEB ensures they have special assistance and writing materials. We are fully prepared, with enough stationery and staff. Last year, four of our special needs candidates were admitted to Makerere and Kyambogo universities, and we are confident this year’s group will perform equally well.”

Grace Rebecca Nampijja and Florence Nyikundire, two of the visually impaired candidates, expressed gratitude for being given the same briefing opportunities as other candidates nationwide.

“We feel privileged to have been briefed today and are confident that we will excel in our final exams,” they said.

“We are praying for success and aiming for excellence.”

Martin Muhumuza, the teacher in charge of special needs education at the school, said while the institution strives to offer inclusive learning, it continues to face challenges such as limited specialized equipment.

“Teaching aids for special needs education are very expensive,” Muhumuza said. “We urge the government to assess student ratios and increase support to ensure equitable learning conditions.”

Hornby High School has an enrollment of 453 learners, including 43 with disabilities.
