IUIU Unveils Shs50bn Engineering Faculty in Mbale in Major Boost for Science Education
The Islamic University in Uganda has opened a new Faculty of Engineering and Technology in Mbale City, a game-changing investment aimed at advancing technical education and innovation in Eastern Uganda.

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has officially unveiled a multi-billion-shilling Faculty of Engineering and Technology at its main campus in Mbale, marking a significant milestone in the university’s expansion and Uganda’s national push for science and innovation.

Valued at Shs50 billion, the state-of-the-art facility was constructed by Vicon Construction, a firm owned by business mogul Sudhir Ruparelia, who personally attended Friday’s handover ceremony with his family.

The project was financed by the Islamic Development Bank, with the Government of Uganda providing sovereign guarantees—underscoring its strategic national importance.

“This faculty is not just a win for IUIU, but for Uganda as a whole,” said Uganda’s Ambassador to Turkey and IUIU Governing Council Member, Nusura Tiperu.

“It supports our journey toward a knowledge-based economy by producing skilled professionals who can drive national development.”

Tiperu lauded the university’s vision, noting that the new faculty aligns with government policy on science, technology, and innovation (STI).

She also revealed that the facility is part of a broader IUIU masterplan that includes independent faculties, a shopping complex, and a modern stadium.

The new faculty will house departments in civil, mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, and includes a 500-bed capacity hostel for students.

According to IUIU Rector, Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, the facility will begin admitting students in the 2026/27 academic year, pending accreditation from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

“This is our ninth faculty, and it is a historic achievement for the university and the region,” Prof. Gyagenda said.

“The building will serve not only as a centre for education, but also as a hub for innovation, research, and local solutions that meet the needs of the 21st century.”

The launch has generated excitement across the Elgon subregion, with educationists and local leaders describing it as a transformative development for Mbale City’s growing reputation as an education and innovation hub.

“Beyond learning, this means real economic opportunity,” said a local education official. “Hotels, transport services, and markets will benefit from the influx of students, staff, and visitors.”

With IUIU operating under the umbrella of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the university is expected to draw international students, further boosting education tourism in Eastern Uganda.

Prof. Gyagenda affirmed that the university’s strategic focus is to build a science-driven generation of thinkers and problem-solvers who will help Uganda compete globally.

“This century is about science and innovation,” he said. “We are proud to play our part in preparing Uganda for that future.”
