Mountain of the Moon University (MMU) has announced plans to roll out its first doctoral program in partnership with the University of Ghent in Belgium, marking a significant milestone in its academic growth.
The program is expected to launch by August 2025 as the university strengthens its commitment to research and higher education excellence.
Speaking at MMU’s 16th Graduation Ceremony, Vice Chancellor Professor Pius Achanga emphasised the institution’s focus on technological advancement to enhance education in agriculture, tourism, and environmental studies. He also acknowledged the government’s support in improving education delivery at the university.
“We appreciate the government for the gesture of giving us funding to improve the provision of education. We will also remain prudent, transparent, and accountable,” Prof. Achanga stated.
Over the past three years, MMU has received nearly Shs 15 billion in funding from various partners, allowing the university to expand its programs and improve facilities.
Chancellor Prof. Edward Bitanywaine Rugumayo highlighted the importance of integrating education with economic growth, social equity, and environmental stewardship.
“Our teaching should encompass strategies and practices that promote economic growth, social equity, and environmental stewardship,” he noted.
As MMU prepares to mark three years as a public university in June 2025, Prof. Rugumayo acknowledged the challenges that come with the transition.
“The university will mark three years as a public entity in June 2025, which comes with many challenges. I am also aware that not all challenges can be solved at once,” he said.
The introduction of the doctoral program, along with continuous investment in technological advancements, positions MMU as a key player in higher education and research, particularly in fields crucial to Uganda’s development.
