Funded under the government’s Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers (UGIFT) programme, the Shs2.6 billion initiative aims to expand access to secondary education in underserved areas.
The construction of Kanara Seed School in Kanara Sub-County, Kitagwenda District, is on track for completion by June 2025.
Initially slated for completion in August 2024, the project faced delays due to material acquisition challenges but remains a beacon of hope for transforming education in the region.
Funded under the government’s Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers (UGIFT) programme, the Shs2.6 billion initiative aims to expand access to secondary education in underserved areas.
Skyworth Technology Service Limited, the contractor, has made significant progress since the project’s launch in January 2023.
Kanara Seed School, an upgrade of the former Kanara Secondary School, will feature six classroom blocks, an administration block, ventilated improved pit latrines, teachers’ houses, a kitchen, two science laboratories, a playground, a multipurpose hall, and an information and communication technology (ICT) library.
Kitagwenda District Education Officer (DEO) Sedas Asiimwe shared updates on the project’s status, expressing optimism about meeting the revised timeline.
“We have completed the roofing, plastering, and other major construction works. What remains now is painting, flooring, and final finishing touches,” Asiimwe revealed during an interview with Nile Post.
He attributed the delays to difficulties in acquiring materials but reassured the community of the project's imminent completion.
“The contractor faced challenges with material acquisition, which caused the delay. However, we are confident the school will be ready for commissioning by mid-2025,” he said.
Once complete, Kanara Seed School is expected to significantly improve access to education in Kanara Sub-County, eliminating the need for students to travel long distances to attend secondary school.
“This school will not only reduce the burden of long-distance travel for our learners but also provide a conducive environment for quality education. It is a milestone for the community and the district at large,” Asiimwe said.
As the first seed school in Kitagwenda District, it marks a major step in the government’s initiative to establish secondary schools in all administrative units, ensuring affordable and quality education for all Ugandans.
Residents of Kanara Sub-County are eagerly awaiting the school’s completion, viewing it as a cornerstone for education and development in the region.
“This project symbolises hope for our children’s future. It will not only boost education but also contribute to the growth and empowerment of our community,” a resident remarked.
Kanara Seed School stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to bridging the education gap, promising a brighter future for learners in Kitagwenda District.
