Kigezi's Kakama Writes UCE Exams With His Feet
Today, across Uganda, 379,748 candidates commenced their final UCE exams in various centers around the country, but few stories are as inspiring as that of John Kakama.
John Kakama, a determined student at Kigezi High School, is a true testament to resilience. Born without the upper limbs, Kakama has refused to let his physical limitations hold him back.
Today, he joins thousands of students sitting the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams, writing with his feet— a skill he has honed over the years to keep pace with his peers.

Kakama, an orphan supported by Compassion International, attended morning prayers with fellow students before heading to the examination room.
Like any other candidate, he was seen in line for checks before entering the exam hall. Once inside, Kakama, with unwavering focus, began his exam, writing with his feet, showcasing his remarkable perseverance.
Reflecting on his journey, Kakama shared that reaching Senior Four was a dream come true.
"I am excited to have made it this far. Sitting for my final Senior Four exams feels like a huge achievement. I have been preparing for weeks and I feel ready," he said.
Despite facing challenges, especially with domestic tasks, Kakama has made strong friendships at school that have helped him navigate these difficulties.
He hopes to join A-level and later pursue a university degree. His aspirations are high—he dreams of becoming a lawyer and, ultimately, Uganda’s Chief Justice.
"I want to prove that disability is not inability. I want to become a great lawyer, specifically a Chief Justice of this country," Kakama added.
Emily Kemitanga, Kakama’s class teacher, described him as a model of perseverance.
"He’s always on time and performs excellently in his studies. We are confident he will excel in his exams," she said.
Obvious Turyangumanawe, one of Kakama’s friends, spoke highly of him, noting his remarkable talent.
"I befriended him out of curiosity, wanting to see how he writes with his feet. His legs are so well-trained that he writes faster than many of us. He’s also incredibly knowledgeable about Bible scriptures and is active in class."
Abraham Akampurira, the headteacher at Kigezi High School, described Kakama as someone who believes in himself.
"He’s a talented musician, participates in all school activities, and works extremely hard. I believe he will achieve outstanding results in the UCE exams," Akampurira said, adding that Kakama’s future is undoubtedly bright.
Akampurira called on the government and schools to identify and support students like Kakama, suggesting that special funding should be provided at all educational levels to aid their success.
As Kakama sits for his exams, his story serves as an inspiration to others, proving that determination can overcome even the greatest challenges.
