The commencement of the new academic year in Tororo has unveiled a stark contrast between government-aided primary schools and secondary institutions.

While many primary classrooms barely reached a headcount of 10, secondary schools reported over 80% student attendance on the first day.

Kasipodo Primary School, representing the concerning trend in primary education, recorded a meagre turnout. Despite all 12 teachers reporting for duty, only 35 out of the expected 700-plus pupils returned.

Primary seven had a mere 4 pupils, primary one registered 21, primary two had 6, and primary three had only 1 student.

"The poor turnout of pupils here is attributed to the negative attitude towards education by parents," remarked Charles Ekisa, Deputy Head Teacher of Kasipodo Primary.

At Katerema Primary School, the situation mirrored Kasipodo, with only 46 out of the anticipated 1145 pupils showing up on the first day.

"The low turnout of learners in primary schools is a worrying trend," expressed Christopher Arojo, Chairperson of the school management committee at Katerema Primary.

However, the narrative took a positive turn in secondary schools. St. Peters College Tororo reported an improved enrolment compared to the previous year, with over 80% of students already in attendance on the first day.

"Of the expected 640 students back, 512 have already reported, and half have cleared their fees dues," shared Luke Emuron, Head Teacher of St. Peters College Tororo.

Emuron attributed the high turnout and timely fee clearance to ongoing engagement with parents even during holidays.
