Members of the Health Committee of Parliament has called upon pharmaceutical scientists to develop vaccines tackling the surge in non-communicable and infectious diseases.
During an oversight visit to Dei Biopharma Limited in Matuga, legislators emphasized the need for research and development prioritization.
"We want pharmaceutical companies to focus on producing vaccines that can address emerging diseases," stated the Vice Chairperson of the Committee Dr. Sam Opio
The lawmakers applauded the government's policies, which have led to an increase in pharmaceutical plants in Uganda.
Dei Biopharma Limited, launched by President Yoweri Museveni in 2021, is a shining example.
Dr. Patrick Wakida, Chairperson of Governors at Dei Biopharma Limited, highlighted the facility's potential: "Once completed, we will reduce medicine importation in Uganda."
The facility, spanning 150 acres, aims to start production in October and employ 40,000 people within the next decade.
Dr. Wakida also says by promoting local pharmaceutical innovation, Uganda aims to enhance its healthcare landscape and combat rising disease rates.
