Police in Buikwe District have arrested a woman in connection with the suspected murder of her two-year-old stepson in a case that has shocked residents of Kiyindi Town Council.

According to police, the incident occurred on the night of June 12, 2026, at around 11:00 p.m. in Gimbo Cell, Kiyindi Ward. Authorities have opened a case of suspected murder by torture.

The deceased has been identified as Innocent Sonko, a two-year-old resident of Gimbo Cell.

Preliminary findings indicate that the child had recently been reunited with his father, Vincent Kivumbi, after spending time with his biological mother.

It is alleged that about two weeks before the incident, Kivumbi contacted his former wife requesting custody of their son. The mother reportedly agreed and handed over the child, after which Kivumbi took him to his residence in Gimbo Cell, where he lived with his stepmother, Jackie Katoko.

The child’s body was discovered on June 13, 2026, at around 11:19 a.m., after a resident identified as Naigaga reported to Kiyindi Police Station that the boy had been found dead inside his parents’ home.

Police officers from Lugazi Central Police Station responded and arrested both the stepmother, Jackie Katoko, and the child’s biological father, Vincent Kivumbi, to assist with investigations.

The body was taken to Kawolo Hospital for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Police spokesperson for the Ssezibwa Region, SP Hellen Butoto, confirmed the arrests and said investigations are ongoing.

Authorities urged the public to remain calm as inquiries continue, reiterating their commitment to ensuring justice is served.
