Police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the alleged mob attack on professional rugby player Sydney Gogondyo that claimed his life on June 5, 2026.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Racheal Kawala, the suspects have been identified as Obed Mugwiisa and Joseph Owino, a security guard.
Their arrest brings the total number of suspects currently in custody to ten as investigations into the incident continue.
Police said Obed Mugwiisa was captured in video footage wearing a yellow T-shirt and carrying a large log during the attack.
During interrogation, investigators reported that Obed led them to a local laundry where he had taken the yellow T-shirt seen in the footage.
The garment was subsequently recovered and has been added to the evidence collected in the ongoing investigation.
"The arrest of Obed Mugwiisa marks a significant development in the investigation. His identification through video footage and the recovery of the clothing he was seen wearing on the day of the incident provide important leads as inquiries continue," Kawala said.
Authorities said efforts remain underway to identify, trace, and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the attack.
"We remain committed to ensuring that all those responsible for this criminal act are held accountable and brought to justice in accordance with the law. Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as progress is made," she added.
Gogondyo was attacked on June 5, 2026, at approximately 2pm in Masulira Zone, Bukoto I Parish, Nakawa Division, Kampala District.
He was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries at around 7pm the same day.
His death has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s rugby community, with fans and stakeholders mourning the loss of a promising player widely regarded as one of the sport’s emerging stars.
Gogondyo was laid to rest on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Buweri Town Council in Budadiri County, Sironko District.
He was part of the Black Pirates team that won the Uganda Rugby Premiership and the Uganda Cup last season.
Police have reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing all individuals connected to the incident as investigations continue.
