The Uganda Police Force has arrested two suspects in Mukono District during an intelligence-led operation targeting the vandalism of electricity infrastructure, following a wave of incidents that have disrupted power supply and caused significant losses.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said the affected areas include Kisoga, Kigombya, Wantoni and Kauga, where criminals have been cutting and stealing Aerial Bundled Cables (ABCs) and damaging electricity installations.
Acting on intelligence, police carried out an operation in the early hours of June 5, 2026, targeting a group suspected of involvement in cable theft and vandalism.
“At approximately 3:00am, an ambush was mounted by police officers at the suspects’ exit route in Kigombya Cell, Namumira Ward, Central Division, Mukono Municipality, as they attempted to move towards Wantoni Town,” Rusoke said.
During the operation, three suspects were intercepted, but one managed to escape while two were arrested.
The suspects were identified as Ronny Mubiru, 25, a driver, and Jamir Kyaddondo, 21, a boda boda rider.
Police also recovered a motorcycle allegedly used in the operation, alongside a roll of stolen ABC cable and other exhibits now being held as evidence.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of the network behind the vandalism and to track down the suspect still at large.
Authorities say the crackdown is part of broader efforts to protect critical infrastructure that has increasingly come under attack, disrupting electricity supply in several parts of the country.
Police have urged residents in Kisoga, Kigombya, Wantoni and Kauga to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around electricity installations, including poles, transformers and substations.
They also warned the public against buying or dealing in suspected stolen electrical materials, including cables and transformers, saying such acts fuel criminal networks and undermine national development.
The Uganda Police Force reiterated its commitment to working with utility agencies and communities to safeguard electricity infrastructure and ensure reliable power supply.
