Police have defended the heavy security presence at the Ggaba daycare murder trial, saying the move is aimed at protecting the suspect and maintaining public order.

According to police, the deployment is necessary to prevent any possible retaliation from members of the public who may attempt to attack the suspect, Christopher Okello Onyum, during court proceedings.

Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said the security measures are also intended to ensure calm and the smooth conduct of the trial.

Kituuma emphasised that the police have a duty to safeguard all individuals involved in the case, including the accused, court officials and members of the public.

He reiterated that the situation remains under control and urged the public to remain peaceful and allow the law to take its course.

Authorities said security will remain in place throughout the trial to prevent any disruptions and ensure that justice is served.
