Police arrest 77 in crackdown on criminal gangs in Busia municipality

Police in Bukedi South Region have arrested 77 suspects following an intelligence-led operation targeting criminal gangs behind a surge in insecurity in Busia Municipality.

The operation, conducted on the night of March 24, 2026, focused on identified crime hotspots including Majengo, Custom Road, Marachi, Sofia and Mugungu. According to police, the crackdown was prompted by growing public concern over panga-wielding gangs, roadblocks, and rising cases of burglary, theft, phone snatching, assault and robbery.

Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson, IP Moses Mugwe said the operation was carried out between 9pm and 10pm, targeting suspected gang hideouts in poorly lit areas.

Police investigations indicate that the suspects would reportedly gather in these dark spots, consume narcotic substances and plan criminal activities before dispersing into different parts of the municipality to execute their missions.

During the operation, security officers recovered a number of items believed to be linked to criminal activity, including narcotic substances such as black tar heroin and a substance locally referred to as “Tina” or jet fuel. Other exhibits recovered include suspected fake gold, a motorcycle believed to have been stolen and a flat-screen television.

All suspects have been charged with “wandering about with intent to commit a felony” at Busia Central Police Station.

Police say case files are being compiled and the suspects are expected to appear in court once the process is complete.

Mugwe commended officers for their commitment to ensuring public safety, noting that such operations will continue as part of efforts to curb crime in the region.

He also warned members of the public against engaging in criminal activities, emphasizing that offenders will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Residents have since welcomed the police action, expressing relief and calling for sustained operations to restore security in the municipality.

Police have pledged to keep the public informed on further developments as investigations continue.
