The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has impounded 33 foreign-registered vehicles in Gulu for violating Temporary Road License regulations following a coordinated enforcement operation on November 15.
The crackdown, conducted jointly with Gulu City Central Division Police and soldiers from the East Nile sub-region, targeted homes, garages, fuel stations, parking yards, and vehicles suspected of breaching importation rules.
“Once the vehicle exceeds the 90 days allowed, they are supposed to pay import tax,” a URA official said, emphasising the requirements of the temporary importation regime.
Customs regulations allow foreign-registered vehicles to operate in Uganda for up to 90 days under a temporary importation pass, known as form C32. URA officials say some owners have been staying beyond the permitted period, selling the vehicles locally, or unlawfully attaching Ugandan number plates.
In total, 55 vehicles were seized during the operation. Twenty-two were later cleared after being found compliant with C32 conditions, while the remaining 33 are held at the URA Gulu Logistics Hub pending further enforcement action.
URA has urged the public to comply with customs laws, warning that violations attract significant fines and liability for full import taxes.
