Teachers in Kaabong District have laid to rest their colleague, Grace Lakica Okello, who was shot dead by suspected armed warriors at Kotome Primary School earlier this week.
The burial, held on November 6, 2025, drew mourners from across the district, including fellow teachers, education officials, and community members who gathered to pay their last respects.
Okello, who taught English Language in the upper primary section, was killed at the teachers’ residence when armed assailants attacked on Monday night.
Police reports indicate Okello was seated with three other teachers — Joseph Abura, Richard Joseph Okore, and Godfrey Loina — when the gunmen suddenly opened fire, killing her instantly.
During the burial, grief and fear were palpable among teachers who said they now live in constant fear of similar attacks.
David Ocheng, a teacher at Kalongor Primary School, said the murder has left many educators traumatized and uncertain about their safety.
“We are living in fear. Every day we come to school not knowing if we will return home alive,” Ocheng said. “We call on the government to provide security for teachers in remote areas.”
The incident has renewed concerns about rising insecurity in Kaabong, where teachers, religious leaders, and local officials have increasingly become targets of armed attacks.
In 2024, a head teacher was similarly shot dead by armed warriors, sparking protests from the education community in Karamoja.
Police say investigations into Okello’s murder are ongoing, and two suspects have already been arrested for questioning.
