A driver has been detained at Nsangi Police Station after his vehicle, dangerously loaded at night along the busy Masaka Road, was intercepted following a public tip-off.
Police have confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, registration number UA 291AA, will face court for offences related to reckless loading and endangering road users.
According to SP Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Traffic and Road Safety Directorate, the arrest followed a report by a concerned citizen who witnessed the vehicle operating unsafely.
“We confirm the detention of the driver of vehicle registration number UA 291AA, who was observed along Masaka Road loaded dangerously in the night,” said SP Kananura.
“The driver is currently in custody at Nsangi Police Station where he will appear in court to face relevant charges related to the offence committed.”
The incident has reignited discussions around road safety and the critical role of community vigilance in preventing road crashes.
Police noted that such actions by the public significantly support their efforts to reduce traffic-related incidents, especially at night when visibility is low and risks are higher.
SP Kananura reiterated the need for drivers to adhere to traffic laws and for the public to stay alert and report dangerous behaviour on the roads.
“We continue to urge all road users to prioritize safety by strictly adhering to traffic regulations,” he said. “Public vigilance and responsible road use remain crucial in our efforts to prevent crashes and protect lives.”
The arrest is part of a broader national campaign by the traffic police to clamp down on reckless road use, which has been a major contributor to Uganda's rising road accident statistics.
