Businessman’s Shs118m Cache Raises Suspicion of Robbery

In a dramatic twist to an alleged robbery case, Police in Rubirizi District have arrested and detained a 38-year-old businessman, Robert Kiiza, following suspicious inconsistencies in his claims that he was robbed of Shs 500 million by unknown masked thugs.

According to the Rubirizi Central Police Station under CRB 284/2025, Kiiza, a resident of Buhera Central, Nyakashaaru Ward in Rubirizi Town Council, reported that on June 9, 2025, at around 4pm, he was ambushed by four masked men traveling in a drone (omnibus vehicle) with an unidentified registration number.

He claimed the attackers robbed him at Nkombe Forest while he was en route to Ishaka, Bushenyi, to spend the night before depositing the funds the following day.

However, upon deeper scrutiny of his statements, police found multiple inconsistencies that cast doubt on the credibility of his account.

“We responded quickly to the incident, but due to glaring contradictions in the complainant’s narrative, we had reason to believe there was more to the story,” said SP Apollo Tayebwa, Greater Bushenyi Region Police spokesperson.

Prompt investigations led police to conduct thorough searches at both Kiiza’s residence and the home of a co-worker from whom he claimed to have collected proceeds from waragi (local gin) sales.

During the search, officers recovered a staggering Shs118 million hidden on the premises.

“Fortunately, we were able to recover a substantial amount of money, which raised further questions about the alleged robbery,” SP Tayebwa noted.

“We continue to investigate the matter thoroughly and will update the public as we progress.”

While the investigation remains ongoing, police are now working to determine the authenticity of the robbery report and whether the businessman may have fabricated the incident to conceal the true source or purpose of the funds.

Authorities have used the incident to caution the public against carrying large sums of money without adequate security measures.

“We strongly urge the public to avoid transporting large amounts of cash without guaranteed protection. It exposes individuals to danger and complicates investigations when things go wrong,” SP Tayebwa advised.

The case continues to unfold, and the Rubirizi Police have pledged to keep the community informed on further developments.
