Four Flying Squad Officers Remanded Over Armed Gold Robbery

Four police officers attached to the Flying Squad Unit in Kireka have been charged and remanded to Luzira Prison over allegations of aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The officers are accused of violently robbing a man identified as Tumukunde John Vian at gunpoint of one kilogram of gold, valued at USD 105,000, and USD 1,000 in cash.

Those charged include Detective Superintendent of Police (D/SP) James Besigye Kiguuya, 38, Detective Corporal (D/CPL) Simon Owona, 36, Francis Abdul Mulangira, 33, and Detective Constable (D/C) Monday Tibaijuka.

Appearing before Magistrate Frank Namanya at the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court, the quartet faced two charges—aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony—under Sections 363, 266, and 267 of the Penal Code Act.

Prosecution told court that investigations are still underway and asked for more time to conclude inquiries, which the magistrate granted.

Given the gravity of the charges, which are capital in nature, the accused were not allowed to enter a plea.

Magistrate Namanya adjourned the matter to 12 June 2025 for mention.

The suspects have been remanded to Luzira until then.
