Police at Atari Checkpoint in Kween District have impounded a lorry carrying 192 jerrycans of illicit crude waragi destined for the Karamoja sub-region.

The driver of the white lorry, registration number UBL 798Z, fled the scene and is still at large.

The seizure was made by officers from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) during a routine security inspection.

“This is a serious public issue. These substances are unregulated and pose a danger to our communities,” said Micheal Chebus, LC3 Chairman of Chepsukunya.

Local residents have also raised alarm. “Illicit alcohol contributes to social problems here, including violence and health complications,” said Richard Akol, a resident of Karinga, Nakapiripirit.

Police have vowed to intensify crackdowns on the trade and warned transporters and dealers that they will face prosecution.
