Masindi – A police trainee at Kabalye Police Training School reportedly fatally shot himself on Wednesday, April 23, with another trainee arrested to assist with investigations.
James Tembo took his life at about 2.30pm after allegedly picking up a firearm from his colleague, Francis Onek.
The incident has prompted an ongoing investigation by the Territorial Police of Masindi. Masindi Central Police officers promptly visited the scene, collecting statements from witnesses.
A postmortem has already been conducted by the police surgeon, and the AK-47 rifle with 28 live rounds of ammunition is now in police custody as part of the investigation.
Police Constable Francis Onek is currently in custody, assisting with inquiries. It is reported that Onek had handed over the firearm to Tembo before the tragic event unfolded.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, said investigations are continuing and assured the public that further updates will be provided once more information becomes available.
"We are allowing our officers on the ground to complete their work. Once we have full information, we will update the country accordingly," Hakiza said.
