The deceased, identified as 21-year-old Nikita Kiconco, was discovered shortly after students had returned from church services on the afternoon of April 20, 2025.

A Senior Six student at Solberg College in Kabale District was on Easter Sunday found hanging from the roof of her dormitory, sending shockwaves through the school community.

The deceased, identified as 21-year-old Nikita Kiconco, was discovered shortly after students had returned from church services on the afternoon of April 20, 2025.

Solberg College headteacher Denis Tusiime confirmed the tragedy and said he immediately reported the matter to Kabale Police Station.

A team of investigators was dispatched to the school.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate said police have opened a case file of suspected suicide and that investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding her death.

“We are working hard to determine the exact cause of the tragedy,” Maate said.

The incident has cast a sombre mood over the school, with classmates and staff struggling to comprehend the loss.

Friends and family of the deceased are in mourning, and the school is expected to provide counselling support for those affected.

Authorities have emphasised the need for strengthened mental health support structures in schools, especially during emotionally taxing periods.

Police are continuing to gather statements and evidence to establish the motive behind the suspected suicide.
