Kitagwenda District Councilor Levi Amarakutunga, who represents Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), alongside three of his workers, is facing four serious criminal charges in connection with the brutal killing of a four-year-old girl.
They are charged with murder, kidnap with intent to murder, aggravated robbery, and human sacrifice.
ASP Ronald Nsabumukiza, the Officer-in-Charge at Kitagwenda Central Police Station, confirmed the charges, emphasising that investigations were being conducted meticulously to ensure justice is served.
“The suspects are facing four charges, including murder, kidnap with intent to murder, aggravated robbery, and human sacrifice. This is why investigations were widened and have taken some time. However, we are progressing well in gathering evidence to support these charges,” ASP Nsabumukiza told the Nile Post.
To facilitate further investigations and interrogation, police have transferred the suspects to Fort Portal Regional Police Headquarters.
“The suspects have been transferred to Fort Portal regional police for further management and interrogation,” Nsabumukiza stated.
The horrific incident has sparked public outrage, with many community members mobilizing to demand justice for the slain girl, Trinah Ainomugisha. Some residents have begun printing T-shirts inscribed with "Justice for Trinah" as a symbol of their call for accountability.
ASP Nsabumukiza also addressed allegations of homosexuality against Amarakutunga, clarifying that no formal complaint had been made and no evidence supported such claims.
“So far, no one has reported any evidence related to the homosexuality allegations. That is why it is not included among the charges,” he explained.
He urged the public to remain patient as the police continue their investigations.
“We urge the community to remain calm and patient as police do their work,” he appealed.
Amarakutunga and his three co-accused were arrested on Monday, following a police probe into what authorities suspect to be a ritual murder.
As the case unfolds, the community remains in mourning for young Trinah Ainomugisha, anxiously awaiting justice.
