Two Killed in Murder and Mob 'Justice' in Kapelebyong

Police in Kapelebyong District are investigating two separate killings that occurred in Chanigweno Village, Nyada Parish, on the night of March 11, 2025, in what appears to be a tragic cycle of violence.
The first victim, 59-year-old peasant farmer Charles Okello, was attacked at around 11:15 PM as he attempted to enter his home after spending time at Oditel Centre.
Unidentified assailants hacked him on the head, and his body was later found under a mango tree, about 100 meters from his house.
The murder was reported to the police at 4:33am by a resident, Silva Enyegu. A team led by Kapelebyong District Police Commander (DPC), detectives, and homicide officers visited the scene, deploying a K9 unit to track the suspects.
The trail led investigators to the home of 67-year-old retired teacher John Enyegu, Okello’s cousin.
However, before police could arrest him, an enraged mob descended on Enyegu and lynched him, accusing him of involvement in Okello’s killing.
According to a statement by Regional Police Commander Damalie Nachuha, preliminary findings indicate that Enyegu sought refuge at the home of a friend, Kibedi, after allegedly killing Okello, but was tracked down and beaten to death about 200 meters from Kibedi’s home.
The second murder was reported to police at 11:44 AM by Basil Ateker, a retired teacher from Amuria District.
Officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) visited the scene and conducted a postmortem examination. A police K9 unit later led detectives to the home of Okello’s first wife, as investigations continued.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for other suspects still at large. Police have strongly condemned the mob action, urging residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to allow legal processes to take their course.
