Authorities in Kaliro District have arrested a police officer in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old student during a mob dispersal operation in Kyani, Bumanya Sub-County.

Sergeant Charles Kyakwise, attached to Kaliro Police Station, was taken into custody to aid in investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mudogo Sogo, a student at Kaliro Vocational Secondary School.

Preliminary reports indicate that on 8 March 2025, a resident of Kananzoki Village, Godfrey Mutebi, reported a case of cattle theft involving three stolen bulls.

A team of police officers responded to the scene and deployed a sniffer dog, which led them to Zigondo Bosco Pande, a known habitual offender.

As police attempted to arrest Zigondo, an angry crowd gathered and turned violent, pelting stones at the officers in an apparent bid to execute mob justice.

The officers took cover indoors with the suspect, trying to calm the situation.

However, as tensions escalated, Sergeant Charles Kyakwise discharged a bullet, fatally striking Mudogo Sogo.

The victim succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to the hospital. His body was later taken to Bumanya Health Centre IV mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Following the shooting, police arrested Sergeant Charles Kyakwise as part of efforts to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

The suspect in the cattle theft case, Zigondo Bosco Pande, was successfully rescued and detained at Kaliro Central Police Station (CPS) for further questioning.

ASP Michael Kasadha, Regional Police Spokesperson for Busoga North, confirmed the ongoing investigations, assuring the public of transparency and accountability in handling the matter.

Authorities have urged the community to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, emphasising the importance of allowing legal processes to take their course.
