LIRA CITY - Police in Lira City West Division are investigating the circumstances surrounding the escape of five suspects from the police cells while in custody.
The escapees are identified as Johny Herbert, charged with burglary and theft, Moses Ocen (defilement), Carlos Ada (theft), Shadrack Odongo, and Robinson Ocen, who are suspected of robbery.
North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, confirmed the incident, which occurred at around 11:15 p.m. on January 8.
According to Okema, the cell’s guard, PC James Euk, heard a loud bang coming from the men’s cells and responded to the disturbance.
Unfortunately, when Euk reached the area, he found the suspects running away, leaving the cell doors wide open. He fired warning shots in the air, but the escapees continued to flee.
“We have confirmed that five suspects escaped, and action has been taken against PC Euk, number 74080,” Okema said.
The police are now focused on re-arresting the escapees and are appealing to the public for assistance.
“A charge has been preferred against PC Euk for negligence, and the suspects are expected to face charges of escaping lawful custody. We call on the public to provide any information that could help in their re-arrest,” Okema added.
Police efforts to track down the escapees are ongoing.
