Police in Kampala have arrested a man who was found in possession of a gun that he had put in a sack in the business park in Kampala.

According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, David Tumwine, 40, a resident of Mubuteraniro village in Mubende district was arrested after he tried to flee when being asked to have the sack checked .

During routine security checks at the terminal in the morning, Tumwine, who was carrying two bags, was asked to stop for inspection at Kisenyi bus terminal. However, he attempted to flee, abandoning his belongings,” Owoyesigyire said.

He said upon taking off, the terminal’s security team gave the suspect a chase until they  apprehended him.

“Upon inspecting his bags, the aforementioned items were discovered. The Police were immediately notified, and the suspect is now in custody at Old Kampala Police Station.”

Owoyesigyire said in the sack were a sub-machine gun (SMG), 24 live rounds of ammunition, two magazines, three pangas, a litre of petrol and ropes.

Police say that preliminary investigations have indicated that Tumwine was traveling from Kyotera District and was en route to Busia.

“We are currently working to establish the source of the firearm and the suspect's intentions.”
