Residents of Abim District are reeling with anger and grief following the tragic killing of 16-year-old Brian Ochen, who was shot dead by suspected Karamojong warriors.
The horrifying incident occurred in Arengepua Ward, Morulem Town Council, when a group of teenagers, including Ochen, were ambushed while returning home from a market.
While his friends managed to escape, Ochen was shot at close range, with a bullet striking his neck, killing him instantly.
Ochen's father, Clement Obonyo, expressed his deep sorrow and disbelief.
“How could someone take the life of a child?” he asked, struggling to process the devastating loss of his innocent son.
Mike Longole, the Karamoja regional police spokesperson, revealed that joint security forces have launched a manhunt to track down the attackers.
"Efforts are underway to bring the perpetrators to justice," Longole stated, assuring residents that authorities are committed to addressing the violence.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Morulem, with residents growing increasingly fearful of the Karamojong warriors, who reportedly now target children during cattle raids.
Godfrey Achila, a local resident, noted that the warriors have resorted to using children as hostages, with deadly consequences for those who resist.
“It’s a terrible situation. The warriors are now targeting our children, and those who resist pay the ultimate price,” he said.
The attack has reopened painful wounds for the community, which faced a surge of violence in 2023, including cattle raids, shootings, and kidnappings.
Basil Obwon, another resident, condemned the attack as a cowardly act and called on leaders and community members to unite in demanding justice.
“It’s heartbreaking to lose such a young life in such a brutal way. We must stand together and demand action,” Obwon urged.
Local leaders have joined the call for stronger security measures to prevent further bloodshed. Denis Odong, chairman of Orwamuge Sub-county, stressed the need for urgent government intervention.
"We want swift action to prevent further loss of innocent lives," Odong said.
As the community mourns the loss of young Ochen, the demand for justice and security grows louder, with residents fearing for the safety of their children amidst the escalating violence.
