A tragic fire incident in Kawempe has claimed the life of a one-year-old boy, while a three-year-old girl remains hospitalised with serious injuries.

The territorial police in Kawempe are currently investigating the suspected arson that occurred on the night of August 1st, 2024, in Kaayi Zone, Nabweru Division, Wakiso District.

According to police the fire broke out at the home of Martin Ikwaru, a 28-year-old army officer, at about 11pm.

"The flames engulfed the bedroom where his two children were sleeping, resulting in the death of Emmanuel Onam, a one-year-and-two-month-old boy.

His sister, three-year-old Elizabeth Anorwoth, was seriously injured and is currently receiving treatment at Kirudu Hospital," said KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire.

Ikwaru, who had stepped out with his new wife to take a shower, discovered the fire around 11:45pm when he noticed flames coming from their home.

He immediately rushed inside to rescue his children but tragically found his bedroom ablaze.

Despite his efforts to save both children, young Onam was confirmed dead at the scene due to suspected suffocation and burns.

"At the crime scene investigators recovered a matchbox and a small plastic container believed to have contained kerosene, both of which have been submitted for forensic analysis," said Luke Owoyesigyire

As the investigation continues, police have arrested one suspect, 25-year-old Deborah Adu, the ex-wife of Ikwaru.

The couple had reportedly separated just a week prior to the incident.

Ms Adu is currently in police custody to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
