KAMPALA | There was a 9% percent reduction in the number of fire incidents registered last year, latest police report shows.

According to the annual crime report released on Wednesday at Police headquarters in Naguru, the number of fires in 2023 reduced to 1,144 from 1,258 registered in 2022.

Police said out of the fires registered last year, 189 were minor and handled before arrival while 15 were false calls.

Police further noted that majority of the fires (233) were registered in residential buildings while 226 fires were registered in makeshift structures.

On the other side, school fires decreased by 23 percent to 50 cases compared to 65 cases registered a year before.

Wakiso registers most fire cases

Regionally, Kampala Metropolitan had the most registered fire cases (814), with Wakiso accounting for most of these (120).

Greater Masaka reported 38 cases, Kiira 24, Rwenzori East 24, West Nile 15, while Elgon region had the lowest cases 9.
