Former Police Special Operations commander, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nixon Agasiirwe, has been formally charged with the 2015 murder of senior state prosecutor Joan Kagezi.
His arrest follows a confession by a convicted hitman who identified him as the mastermind behind the assassination.
Agasiirwe appeared on Monday before the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court, where he was charged with murder contrary to sections 183 and 184 of the Penal Code Act.
The prosecution alleges that Agasiirwe, together with others still at large, with malice aforethought caused the death of Kagezi on March 30, 2015, in Kiwatule, Nakawa Division, Kampala.
Due to the capital nature of the offence, Agasiirwe was not allowed to enter a plea. The case can only be heard by the High Court.
State prosecutor Joseph Kyomuhendo informed the court that investigations are still ongoing and requested more time to complete inquiries.
Presiding Chief Magistrate Esther Nyadoi remanded Agasiirwe to Luzira Prison until July 8.
Agasiirwe's arraignment follows the plea bargain and confession of Daniel Kisekka, 47, who admitted to taking part in the murder and later turned state witness.
During a High Court session in Kampala, Kisekka testified that the killing was ordered by a man only identified as "Nixon."
Joan Kagezi was a lead prosecutor in high-profile terrorism and war crimes cases, including proceedings against suspects in the 2010 Kampala bombings.
Her murder shocked the country and sparked years of stalled investigations.
