Armed soldiers patrolled the road leading to the court, maintaining a heavy presence and creating an air of unease.
Gaining access to the court premises proved difficult, as security personnel rigorously screened everyone with extensive questioning. Unfortunately, I could not make it past the court gates.
Inside the court’s outer compound, Dr. Besigye’s legal team, led by Martha Karua, was seen in a closed-door meeting, preparing for the proceedings. Those who arrived late hurried to secure access.
When Dr. Besigye was finally brought to court, his supporters outside erupted into songs praising him, while others inside joined in celebration.
Dr. Besigye was escorted into the courtroom under heavy guard.
Outside the court and eagerly waiting was 82 year old John Chrisestom Kiwanuka who told us that he wanted to stand surety for Dr.Besigye.
"I am here to stand surety for Dr.Besigye who is a good leader. He should not be in this Kangaroo ... (gears in disgust)
A confrontation broke out between the security team and the lawyers, some of whom were initially denied access unless they surrendered their mobile phones. Among those barred was Erias Lukwago, who refused to proceed without his phone.
Some lawyers appeared visibly frustrated and attempted to negotiate access. One lawyer, Eron Kiiza, was seen doing push-ups outside the court in apparent protest before eventually gaining entry. Inside the courtroom, heated exchanges ensued as lawyers engaged in verbal battles to defend their client.
Meanwhile, outside the court, Besigye’s supporters, growing restless and eager for updates, began to create a scene. Some attempted to storm the court premises but were restrained by security forces.
After hours of waiting, around 3:00 PM, court adjourned, and Besigye’s lawyers briefed the media on what transpired inside.
(Ambiance)
Although we did not witness Dr. Besigye leaving court, we learned from cheers and chants outside that he had been escorted away in a drone van, flanked by heavily armed soldiers.
