Dr Baterana gets bail relief but Mulago pain remains

The Anti-Corruption court in Kampala has granted cash bail to former Mulago General Referral Hospital executive director  Byarugaba Baterana and seven others accused of misusing their offices and causing financial loss of tax payers’ money, while in office.

The court ruling read by Grade One magistrate Abert Asiimwe, granted Dr Baterana a 10m cash bail and other conditions including depositing his passport, not move out of the country without court’s permission but also avoid interfering with investigations into the matter but if he violates these conditions, he will be arrested and remanded in custody.

Dr Baterana’s co accused including Eng. Edward Kataha, Charles MWASA, Kenneth WAFULA, Okware Christopher, Adah Kamucunguzi, Robert Wasike and Catherine Nabwire were given a cash bail ranging between 4-10m bail of between 4m-10m and non-cash of 50-100m to their sureties.

The court will resume hearing on 5th August 2024 to see the progress of the investigation.

According to the prosecution, Dr Baterana and former Mulago General Hospital employees Eng. Edward Kataha, Kenneth Wafula, Adah Kamucunguzi, Perezi Matanda, Charles Mwasa and Ponziano Nyeko misused their office and caused hefty financial loss to the tax payers’ money when they paid Setramaco Limited and Convention World Limited for the works which were not done which saw the arrest of the owners of the companies Catherine Winifred Nabwire and Robert Wasike on the same charges.
