The three key suspects in the murder of Dr Jino Abiriga, former Masindi District Health Officer, have been remanded to Hoima Prison until February 13, 2024. Betty Cherotich, the deceased's wife, Joshua Namurenge, and Martin Kipsang appeared before Masindi Grade One Magistrate Selsa Biwaga on Tuesday, January 30.

State prosecutor Aganyira Munanura informed the court that investigations into the case are still ongoing. Due to the nature of the offence, being a capital offence, the Magistrate's court does not have jurisdiction to hear the case.

"My Lord, the investigations into this case are still ongoing," Munanura stated. "We pray that the suspects are further remanded while our office works with the police to finalise the file and enable court proceedings to move forward as they should."

Magistrate Biwaga granted the prosecution's request and remanded the trio to Hoima Prison until their next court appearance on February 13.

"This court has no jurisdiction to hear your case, as it is a capital offence that can only be heard in the High Court," the Magistrate explained. "Additionally, as you have heard, investigations are still ongoing. Therefore, I remand you back to Hoima Government Prison until February 13, 2024, when you will return for a case mention."

Dr Abiriga was murdered on January 7, 2024, and his body was found dumped in a neighbour's compound. His wife, Cherotich, along with Namurenge and Kipsang, were arrested shortly after.
